LP® SmartSide® is a next-generation American siding panel, widely used in residential construction across the United States. It’s made from compressed aspen wood strands bonded with resins and coated with a protective primer. Although its manufacturing process is similar to that of OSB panels, LP® SmartSide® is not an OSB panel.

LP® SmartSide® products are manufactured using the patented SmartGuard® technology, which is one of the main reasons this material is highly resistant to environmental factors. This process incorporates four protective components, significantly increasing the panel’s durability and enabling LP® SmartSide® products to withstand warping, temperature fluctuations, high humidity, and other harsh conditions.

The production process involves additives such as resins, waxes, zinc, and a primed coating.

How is LP® SmartSide® different from traditional wood?

LP® SmartSide® differs from traditional wood both in how it’s made and in its technical properties.

Weather Resistance
LP® SmartSide® panels are more resistant to moisture, rot, insects, and temperature fluctuations than regular wood. This durability comes from SmartGuard® technology, which incorporates protective components like zinc borate, wax, and primer during the manufacturing process.

Durability
Over time, traditional wood can warp, twist, or crack. Thanks to its engineered structure and built-in protection, LP® SmartSide® maintains its shape and attractive appearance.

Easier Maintenance
LP® SmartSide® panels have a smooth, uniform surface—free of cracks, resin pockets, or knots commonly found in natural wood. This makes them easy to paint, with even coverage and excellent adhesion to the factory-applied primer. Unlike traditional wood, LP® SmartSide® requires minimal upkeep year after year, making it a practical and long-lasting choice.

Sustainability
LP® SmartSide® manufacturing utilizes 99% of the wood material efficiently. It’s either used in the products themselves or as a renewable energy source in the production facility.

Are LP® SmartSide® sheds resistant to moisture and weather conditions?

Yes, LP® SmartSide® panel sheds are resistant to both moisture and various weather conditions. This durability is made possible by the SmartGuard® technology used in the production of LP® SmartSide® panels.

– Zinc Borate – This naturally derived additive protects the panels from fungi and pests. LP® SmartSide® contains three times more zinc borate than standard materials. It’s safe for humans but effectively eliminates pest infestation.

– Resins – A marine-grade epoxy resin is applied to the panels, providing exceptional resistance to heavy impacts and temperature fluctuations.

– Wax – Water-resistant wax coats every wood strand, creating a moisture barrier that withstands rain, snow, and humidity.

– Primed Coating – This final protective layer shields the panel from moisture and creates a durable base for strong paint adhesion.

LP® SmartSide® panel sheds also offer increased roof load capacity—up to 120 kg/m². In contrast, traditional wooden sheds typically have a recommended maximum load of only 30 kg/m² (e.g., during snowfall).

Are LP® SmartSide® panel sheds pre-treated or painted?

No, LP® SmartSide® panel sheds are not pre-treated or painted. They can be painted after assembly. However, we recommend applying one coat of paint to the backside of the wall panels before installation, as this surface becomes hard to reach afterward. Doing so ensures complete moisture protection and extends the product’s lifespan.

Is it difficult to assemble an LP® SmartSide® panel shed?

No, assembling an LP® SmartSide® panel shed is not difficult. The shed is built using a panelized construction system, meaning most components—such as wall panels, roof sections, and other parts—are pre-fabricated and delivered ready for assembly.

Each shed comes with a detailed step-by-step installation manual with illustrations. On average, two people can assemble a medium-sized shed in about 8 to 9 hours.

It’s recommended to clean the exterior with a soft cloth or brush, followed by a rinse with water. Avoid using bleach or ammonia-based cleaners. Do not use high-pressure washers, as excessive pressure can damage the paint and force moisture into inner layers.
